SCOUTING REPORT
CARLETON COLLEGE
Last updated: July 22, 2026
Overview
Carleton is operating as a high-academic Division III program with its clearest identity in distance running, where its women remain a national-caliber force and its men continue to score well in the MIAC. Across track and field, Carleton has built its strongest foundation through cross country and distance events, while the sprint, jump, and throwing groups are more developmental and are being used to raise conference ceiling rather than drive the program. For recruits, that means Carleton is combining strong academic expectations with especially serious distance recruiting, while using selective additions in other event areas to stabilize conference team scoring.
Men's Program Pro
Carleton’s men are anchored by a solid distance tradition in cross country and track, and that remains the most reliable pathway for impact as the program works to regain upper-tier MIAC standing outdoors. The Knights are also actively reinforcing men’s sprints and hurdles because that group has lagged behind the conference’s best and has the most meaningful upcoming roster turnover, making 400 meters and hurdle-capable athletes especially valuable. In the field events, Carleton is looking for useful conference scorers rather than complete roster overhauls, with jumps and javelin recruits able to add points to a team that is strongest when distance carries the core load.
Women's Program Pro
Carleton’s women are one of the defining distance programs in the MIAC and remain nationally relevant in cross country, so the women’s 1500 meters, 3000 meters, 5000 meters, and 800 meters pipeline is the program’s central priority. On the track, the women have historically relied on distance strength to offset more modest sprint, jump, and throwing production, which makes complementary recruits in hurdles, long jump, and sprint events especially useful for protecting conference team position. With only limited upcoming cross country turnover, the women’s side is not rebuilding its identity; it is reinforcing an already elite distance culture while adding versatile athletes who can broaden championship scoring.
Current Recruiting Outlook Pro
Right now, Carleton is recruiting as a distance-first program on both sides, with the women pursuing high-end academic recruits who can contribute to national-level cross country and the men pursuing strong MIAC-impact distance runners who can also strengthen cross country depth. The most urgent non-distance need is on the men’s side in sprints and hurdles because of pending departures and weaker conference leverage there, while the women are adding selective support pieces in hurdles and long jump to complement their distance core. Overall, Carleton is looking for recruits who fit a rigorous Division III academic environment and can either sustain its women’s distance excellence or raise its men’s team balance through sprint-hurdle and secondary field-event points.
