SCOUTING REPORT
UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS
Last updated: July 22, 2026
Overview
Kansas fields balanced Big 12 programs with its clearest year-to-year strengths in jumps on both sides, solid men’s throws, and increasingly important women’s distance scoring, while cross country remains more middle-of-the-conference than nationally prominent. The Jayhawks are competing from a strong Power Four foundation, but the next step is reinforcing proven scoring groups and shoring up event areas that have recently lagged so the overall programs can push back toward the upper tier of the conference and stay relevant nationally.
Men's Program Pro
Kansas men’s track and field is built around elite jumps recruiting and consistent conference impact in the field, with throws also supplying meaningful support, while the distance group has been respectable across track and cross country but now faces a major upcoming loss of top-end talent. Sprinting and hurdling has shown less recent conference punch than the field events, so Kansas is actively reloading there, but the most urgent men’s need is adding immediate Big 12-caliber 800/1500/5000-meter talent to protect distance depth while continuing to bring in high-upside jumpers and impact throwers who can sustain the program’s strongest scoring identity.
Women's Program Pro
Kansas women’s track and field has been most dependable in distance and jumps, with cross country and distance giving the program a solid endurance base, while sprints/hurdles has more clearly trailed the conference’s better teams despite ambitious standards. With multiple upcoming departures across distance, sprints/hurdles, jumps, and throws, the women’s side is entering a broad roster-refresh cycle, so Kansas is reinforcing its strongest event groups with high-level jumpers and middle-distance runners while also pursuing sprinters and hurdlers who can elevate a lineup that has not converted recruiting ambition into consistent conference scoring strength.
Current Recruiting Outlook Pro
Kansas is currently looking for immediate-impact recruits more than developmental depth, especially men’s jumpers, men’s middle-distance and distance runners, women’s jumpers, women’s sprinters/hurdlers, and women’s middle-distance athletes who can score quickly in the Big 12. It is also continuing to recruit men’s throws and women’s throws selectively to preserve field-event balance, while the cross country focus is clearly on adding track-capable distance recruits who can raise both the fall teams and the 800 through 5000-meter groups in the spring.
