SCOUTING REPORT

IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY
Runcruit
Last updated: July 22, 2026

Overview

Iowa State is operating as a high-end Big 12 distance program with enough overall talent to stay nationally relevant, but its current recruiting push is broader than distance alone. The Cyclones’ men are anchored by elite cross country and distance strength, while the women have surged into a stronger all-around track profile with especially ambitious standards in jumps, throws, and distance. Across both programs, Iowa State is maintaining conference-contending distance groups and is actively adding impact athletes in complementary event areas to raise overall championship scoring.

Iowa State’s men remain defined by one of the Big 12’s premier distance cultures, with cross country and track distance events serving as the program’s clearest identity and most reliable source of high-level results. The current need is not to reinvent that group but to reload it with top-tier 800 meters, 1500 meters, 3000 meters, and 5000 meters talent as an upcoming wave of highly rated distance athletes exits, while also reinforcing sprints/hurdles and throws enough to protect overall conference standing. Because the men have been solid rather than dominant outside distance, Iowa State is also looking for immediate scorers in the hurdles, high jump, long jump, discus, and shot put to round out championship balance.

Iowa State’s women are building from a strong distance and cross country base into a more complete Big 12 contender, and the recent rise in track performance shows that this expansion is already taking hold. The women’s distance group remains central and now requires another class of high-end 800 meters, 1500 meters, 3000 meters, and 5000 meters recruits to offset a significant upcoming loss of proven cross country and track contributors, while the program is simultaneously pushing hard for impact athletes in jumps and throws. Sprint and hurdle recruiting also matters, but the clearest emphasis is on preserving elite distance quality and adding field-event difference makers who can keep Iowa State near the top of the conference team race.

Iowa State is currently recruiting as a program expecting proven conference scorers and national-caliber developmental pieces, especially in distance on both sides and in women’s field events. On the men’s side, it is aggressively pursuing elite distance runners, plus targeted help in hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put, and discus; on the women’s side, it is actively adding top-end distance runners, jumpers, throwers, and 400-meter to hurdle athletes who can elevate team scoring quickly. The program is not casting a broad net for depth alone--it is focusing on recruits capable of sustaining its distance identity while lifting the event groups that decide Big 12 championship placement.
