SCOUTING REPORT

THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY
Runcruit
Last updated: July 22, 2026

Overview

OSU remains one of the Big Ten’s most talent-driven programs, with its clearest identity centered on elite sprint/hurdle recruiting and strong all-around track support, while its distance groups are competitive enough to score but still sit behind the program’s speed-based backbone. On the women’s side, OSU has recently operated as a conference contender with national-level upside, while the men have stayed firmly relevant in the Big Ten and are sustaining a stronger recent national track profile. Across both genders, OSU is now reinforcing sprint/hurdle excellence, protecting distance depth against significant upcoming turnover, and adding impact field-event pieces to keep its conference scoring range broad.

The men’s program at OSU is built around a premier sprint/hurdle unit that consistently drives conference success and gives the Buckeyes their strongest national event-group identity, so it is continuing to pursue high-end 100, 200, 400, 110 hurdles, and 400 hurdles talent. The men’s distance side is more developmental by conference standards, but the staff is still recruiting serious 800, 3000, 5000, and cross country talent because an upcoming loss of top-rated distance athletes raises the urgency of rebuilding that scoring layer. Jumps and throws remain important support areas rather than the defining core, with jumps needing fresh impact pieces to offset upcoming losses and maintain multi-event conference scoring.

The women’s program at OSU has recently been strongest when its sprint/hurdle group controls major points, and that remains the clearest recruiting priority as the Buckeyes replace an upcoming class of exceptionally strong outgoing sprinters and hurdlers. The women’s distance group has been a dependable conference contributor across track and cross country, but substantial upcoming turnover there means OSU is actively restocking 800, 1500, 3000, 5000, and cross country depth with athletes who can develop into scorers. In the field, throws and select jumps continue to matter for maintaining upper-division conference standing, with OSU especially valuing high-ceiling shot put, discus, long jump, and triple jump recruits.

OSU is currently recruiting as a high-expectation Big Ten program that is prioritizing immediate-impact sprint/hurdle athletes on both sides, especially those capable of contributing quickly in relay-heavy and hurdle-centered scoring roles. At the same time, it is aggressively replenishing men’s and women’s distance depth because upcoming roster turnover is hitting those groups hard enough to affect both cross country stability and middle-distance to long-distance track scoring. The broadest secondary push is toward complementary field-event talent--especially men’s jumps, women’s throws, and women’s horizontal jumps--so OSU can preserve its conference versatility while keeping its top-end event groups elite.
