SCOUTING REPORT
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA - BERKELEY
Last updated: July 22, 2026
Overview
Cal is operating like an upper-tier ACC program with clear event-specific strengths and nationally ambitious recruiting profiles, especially in men’s throws, men’s distance, and women’s distance. Its recent conference results show a program that is consistently competitive on the men’s side and more event-dependent on the women’s side, with the Bears using high-end standards in several areas to protect scoring power while selectively reloading places where upcoming roster turnover is concentrated.
Men's Program Pro
Cal’s men are a strong ACC contender built around elite field-event scoring and a high-level distance identity, with jumps and throws functioning as reliable conference point engines and cross country/distance remaining a major recruiting priority. The upcoming loss of a large, highly rated distance group makes the men’s 1500 meters, 3000 meters, 5000 meters, and 800 meters especially important, while the program is also continuing to add impact hurdlers and jumpers to complement its established strength in the throws.
Women's Program Pro
Cal’s women remain most dangerous when distance and throws are carrying major scoring loads, and the program is still recruiting at a nationally ambitious level in the distance events even as overall team results have fluctuated. With upcoming departures concentrated in distance and with sprints, hurdles, and jumps needing more support to raise the team ceiling in the ACC, the Bears are actively reloading the 800 meters, 1500 meters, and 3000 meters while also seeking immediate contributors in the hurdles and vertical/horizontal jumps.
Current Recruiting Outlook Pro
Cal is currently looking for high-impact distance recruits on both the men’s and women’s sides, with cross country strength and collegiate 1500/3000-meter range standing at the center of its recruiting approach. On the men’s side it is also pursuing ACC-ready throwers, hurdlers, and jumpers to sustain top-end conference scoring, while on the women’s side it is emphasizing distance depth first and then adding selective help in hurdles, jumps, and the stronger throwing disciplines to stabilize team scoring across more event areas.
