SCOUTING REPORT
RICE UNIVERSITY
Last updated: July 22, 2026
Overview
Rice fields a balanced but clearly differentiated program profile in the American: its women’s side is operating as a conference title contender with nationally relevant track quality, while its men’s side is more event-specific and leans heavily on throws for conference scoring. Across both programs, Rice is recruiting with solid Division I standards, but its women’s standards are especially assertive in jumps, throws, and sprint hurdles, signaling an effort to sustain top-end conference performance while adding national-caliber depth; on the men’s side, the current emphasis is on raising overall team balance around an established throws backbone.
Men's Program Pro
Rice’s men are strongest in the throws, where it is a consistent conference force, while distance has been competitive enough to matter in both cross country and track without yet separating from the league’s top tier; sprints, hurdles, and jumps remain the clearest areas for upward movement. With upcoming losses in men’s cross country from highly rated distance athletes, Rice is actively replenishing 5000-meter, 1500-meter, and 3000-meter talent to protect its distance foundation, and it is simultaneously pursuing stronger hurdlers, vaulters, and quarter-milers to turn a specialized roster into a more complete conference scorer.
Women's Program Pro
Rice’s women are one of the American’s premier programs, built around elite conference-level sprint/hurdle production, strong jumps, and enough distance quality to score across multiple championships seasons, with cross country also operating near the front of the league. Because the Owls have outgoing high-impact distance athletes in both cross country and track, Rice is actively restocking the 1500 meters, 3000 meters, 5000 meters, and 800 meters, but the program is also continuing to chase high-end sprint hurdlers, 100-meter sprinters, pole vaulters, and discus/shot put athletes to preserve its conference-winning edge and maintain national relevance.
Current Recruiting Outlook Pro
Rice is currently looking for impact women who can score immediately in sprint hurdles, jumps, throws, and key distance events, and for men who can elevate team balance around existing throws strength through distance reinforcements and stronger sprint/hurdle and vault additions. The clearest recruiting push is toward women with upper-conference ability and men with developmental-to-impact upside in the 800 meters through 5000 meters, 110-meter hurdles, 400 meters, and pole vault, while proven throwers remain valuable on both sides even where Rice already scores well.
