SCOUTING REPORT

UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO
Runcruit
Last updated: July 22, 2026

Overview

San Francisco is centered overwhelmingly around distance, with its women’s side operating at a notably higher recruiting level than its men’s side and with cross country serving as the clearest extension of that identity. The Dons are building around athletes who can contribute across cross country, the 1500 meters, 3000 meters, and 5000 meters, while women’s sprint recruiting exists more as a supporting layer than a core program driver.

San Francisco’s men’s program is currently defined by developmental distance recruiting rather than broad event coverage, and its biggest immediate issue is replacing pending losses from the men’s distance group in both cross country and track. On the track side, the Dons are most clearly needing 1500-meter and 3000-meter types who can also help in cross country, while the softer 800-meter standard suggests the program is not prioritizing pure middle-distance specialists at the same level as aerobic, range-based distance runners.

San Francisco’s women’s program is the stronger and more selective side of the roster, with a clear emphasis on high-level distance talent that can score in cross country and extend into the 1500 meters, 3000 meters, and 5000 meters. With outgoing impact in the women’s distance group, the Dons are actively reloading that core, while also adding selective sprint-hurdle depth--especially in the hurdles and quarter-oriented events--to complement a program whose competitive identity still runs through distance.

San Francisco is currently recruiting women who can arrive ready to raise its cross country and distance scoring ceiling, especially proven 1500/3000/5000 athletes, and it is also pursuing a smaller number of women’s sprint-hurdle contributors. On the men’s side, it is specifically replacing upcoming distance departures by targeting cross country runners with track range, prioritizing 1500-meter and 3000-meter recruits over pure 800-meter specialists and focusing on athletes who fit a distance-first roster structure.
