SCOUTING REPORT

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA - MERCED
Runcruit
Last updated: July 22, 2026

Overview

UC Merced has built one of the Cal Pac’s strongest overall track and field profiles, with both programs consistently controlling conference meets and doing so through especially reliable distance production. Its recruiting approach is clearly split by event group: the Bobcats are pushing hardest for higher-end men’s distance talent, staying assertive in men’s sprints, and taking a broader, more developmental approach on the women’s side outside of cross country. As a high-academic NAIA option in California, UC Merced is looking for recruits who can contribute quickly to conference title defense while also helping the program raise its national competitiveness.

UC Merced’s men are anchored by a premier conference-level distance group across cross country and track, and that remains the clearest identity of the program. The standards show that it is continuing to chase strong 800 meters, 1500 meters, 3000 meters/5000 meters-level distance recruits who can score in multiple seasons, while the men’s sprint group is also being reinforced after an upcoming loss in that area and with the goal of preserving conference dominance. With several pending departures in men’s distance, the Bobcats are adding depth as much as top-end quality so the program can keep controlling Cal Pac championship racing and strengthen its NAIA standing.

UC Merced’s women have been the conference benchmark in track and field, with especially firm control of distance, sprints/hurdles, and jumps at the league level, but the recruiting posture is more selective in women’s cross country than in women’s track. That points to a program that is continuing to value strong 5000 meters and 3000 meters-oriented distance runners for cross country support while also welcoming versatile track athletes who can score in sprints and middle distance without requiring the same national-level marks as the men’s side. With outgoing women’s distance athletes pending, UC Merced is reinforcing women’s endurance depth first and then layering in sprint contributors who can maintain the team’s broad conference scoring base.

Right now, UC Merced is prioritizing men’s distance most aggressively, specifically athletes suited for the 800 meters, 1500 meters, and 3000 meters/5000 meters pipeline, while also actively replenishing men’s 100 meters, 200 meters, and 400 meters depth. On the women’s side, it is focusing first on cross country and distance recruits who can help in the 5000 meters and 3000 meters, then adding women’s 200 meters and complementary sprint pieces to protect conference supremacy. Across both rosters, UC Merced is recruiting athletes who can score immediately in the Cal Pac and develop into stronger NAIA contributors over time.
